A leisurely, cultural summer cruise under the Mediterranean sun

Hello cruisers!   It’s been a year since Ken and I returned from our fabulous, fun-filled, enriching, inspirational four month cruise, circumnavigating the globe om board Silver Whisper. (see my feature under Great Boat Journeys, World Cruise).

Luxury on board the Orient Express

Luxury on board the Orient Express

In three weeks time, 25 June, we shall be taking the East Coast train from Edinburgh to London in order to board the Orient Express British Pullman from Victoria to the Channel Tunnel.  In France we shall then step on board the famous Venice-Simplon train for a two day journey across Europe to Venice. This is the way to travel, slow, slow all the way.  The special pre cruise land adventure links neatly to the departure of our Silversea cruise – the classic, romantic train and 6 star luxury cruiseline make ideal partners.

Time to pause awhile for a relaxing, cultural, foodie,  two night stay at Hotel Danieli,  its grand, gracious waterfront location  just a stroll from St. Mark’s Square.  La Serenissima, ” the most serene” city,  will be the most breathtaking starting point for our three week cruise on board Silver Wind, sailing up the Guidecca Canal and across the Lagoon.

So where are we going, you may ask!  This itinerary will visit five countries – Slovenia, Montenegro, Italy, Spain and France.

First we shall slowly explore the Croatian coastline,  days ashore in Split and Dubrovnik and around the Islands of the Gods of the Adriatic Sea.

The enchanting stretch of Dalmation coast of Croatia is peppered with 1,000 picturesque islands, beaches, quaint fishing villages,  marinas, vineyards and forested valleys.  The Kornati archipelago is a National Park of natural beauty due to hidden coves.

George Bernard Shaw fell in love with the islands and said “On the last day of Creation God desired to crown His work, and thus created the Kornati islands out of tears, stars and breath.”  The island of Korkula is renowned for its maritime history and reputed birthplace of the explorer Marco Polo.  A boat trip over to the Elafiti Islands may give us the opportunity to swim and snorkel in azure blue waters.

Another magical cruising destination is around Italy: Silver Wind will be visiting Sorrento – near the romantic isle of Capri – and then meandering up the scenic Amalfi Coast with its steep cliffs, fishing ports, lemon groves and charming resorts of Positano and Portofino.

We shall over the sea to Sardinia, the spectacular Costa Smeralda, (beloved by the celebrity set),  and then on to Livorno, the port gateway to visit Florence and Lucca.  Across the Mediterranean to Barcelona for an overnight visit to give plenty time to shop, nibble tapas, sip wine and walk up and down Las Ramblas.

And finally a leisurely, lazy sail along the Cote d’Azur, the French Riviera –  Sete, Cannes, Nice, Monte Carlo –  the epitome of luxury lifestyle, super yachts glistening in the sun and gourmet cuisine.

I shall write all about our luxury voyage by train and ship on my return in July.  Happy travels!
